Only the bravest of independent travellers head off without
one. If it's your first time going it alone, a good guidebook
will help you find your feet.
Verge staff have different (passionate) opinions about which
guides are the best. So rather than give you a recommendation,
here's a list of some major guidebook publishers for budget
travellers.
We DO recommend, however, that you go into a bookstore and
spend some quality time with the guide or guides you are considering
before making a decision. Don't just order online or trust
the opinions of friends. Choosing a guide may be one of the
more important pre-departure decisions you will make.
Having a train ticket valid in 30 countries
does not necessarily mean that you can just show up without
a visa. Having a job offer in another country does not mean
you have the right to work there.
Customs and immigration have a reputation for being... err...
difficult . Don't give them an excuse to intimidate you...
get the right paperwork. Find out what you need.
